movement diaries • sometimes I miss the way I used to move with such conviction through this life.

Somewhere between innocence and ignorance; things seemed so much clearer than they do now.

I think part of growing up is realising what we once saw as black and white are in fact all just different shades of grey.

I know just enough to be painfully aware that I have no fcuking idea.

How catastrophically, hilariously, humbling.

Lately I’ve been pondering a lot on how often things that once felt far away from each other, perhaps even perceived opposites - I now see how close they sit beside each other. How sometimes they even share the same name.

Joy and pain, love and grief, endings and beginnings, breaking and opening, darkeness and light, heaviness and relief.

And perhaps it is true that to truely know one, we must meet the other.

And hold them both gently,
knowing that somehow,
in the space between them,
we are most fully alive.

So here we are again, letting it all live through us, and dancing in reverence and awe of this beautiful, unbearable, fleeting, eternal thing called life.

Try these cues to fire up your pigeon pose 🔥

It’s a fun (and pretty challenging) way to add some mobility into a class / practice.

Another way to cue the legs could be to try to “drag” the front knee back and the back leg forward without actually moving them (an isometric contraction).

I often like to cue this approach to pigeon to feel the 🔥 before easing into a more passive, relaxed variation of the shape.

I love this approach to teaching. Learn a little bit of vocabulary together, and then take time for a ‘closed improvisation’ where the invitation is to explore using the vocabulary learnt, to play with transitions, speed, dynamics . To make it your own without loosing the task at hand (it’s not any / all / ‘free’ movement)

Do you enjoy learning like this ?

‘Cat-cow’ is a great way to warm up the spine- but why limit them to table top?

Adding spinal flexion and extension to different shapes is a great way to introduce variety, add novelty and explore how different shapes create different challenges and dynamics , whilst developing greater body awareness and control.

Here are some ideas of places to play with this.

Remember, not every position will create a dramatic looking ‘cat-cow’. Sometimes the movement is subtle, but the intention remains the same. Focus on the quality of the movement, rather than how ‘big’ it looks.

As far as I know - we get one of these incredible, wise and adaptable human bodies.
Remember to explore it, move it, love it, honour it, appreciate it.

Movement is life. Whichever way you look at it. We are made to move.

How? Now there is a big question. I’m not here to tell you this way is the way. Nor do I believe one method, protocol or path could ever be for for everyone.

What I do believe is that for the most part, it isn’t about finding the ‘perfect’ routine you will do when you finally have the time or space - it’s about incorporating more variety of movement back into your daily life.

I believe it is what we do (not what we say we are going to do, or talk about) that counts.

So if its 5 minutes, 10 minutes, in your kitchen, with your baby in your arms, in your bedroom, in your pijamas, in your work clothes. Then that’s where it’s at.

Get up, get moving.
Have fun. Be kind.

Spinal explorations • investigating head / pelvis initiating and leading movement - looking for fluid and organic pathways through the body.

Here I am trying to focus on being honest with what part of me is really initiating, noticing if I am anticipating / deciding to make something specific happen or really allowing the movement to travel organically, and also paying attention to the sticky places and pathways 🌀
